Every dog starts somewhere.
For Jax, that journey began as an energetic 8-week-old Labrador Retriever mix with a lot to learn and an owner eager to give him the best possible foundation.
Today, Jax has grown into a well-mannered, confident dog who has successfully completed multiple training milestones at K9s Place and is now working toward an even bigger goal: becoming a service dog.
His story is a great reminder that successful training isn’t about perfection overnight. It’s about consistency, patience, and building a strong partnership between dog and owner.
Starting With the Basics
Like many new puppy owners, Jax’s owner, Renee, wanted to make sure he developed into a well-behaved companion.
After losing a beloved dog, bringing home a new puppy came with both excitement and uncertainty. She wanted to make sure Jax had every opportunity to succeed.
Through daycare, training, and regular practice, Jax began learning the skills that would become the foundation for everything that followed.

Learning Through Group Classes
As Jax grew, so did his confidence.
He continued progressing through K9s Place’s group training program, successfully earning his:
- Canine Good Citizen (CGC)
- Canine Good Citizen Advanced (CGCA)
- Canine Good Citizen Urban (CGCU)
Each class introduced new challenges and more distracting environments, helping Jax strengthen his obedience while preparing him for real-world situations.
Group classes are designed to do more than teach commands. They help dogs learn to focus around other people, other dogs, and everyday distractions while giving owners the tools to continue building those skills at home.
More Than Training
One of the things Renee appreciates most isn’t just how much Jax has learned, but how much he enjoys coming to K9s Place.
She shared that Jax gets excited every time they pull into the parking lot for daycare or training.
Even more impressive, she joked that all Trevor (Owner) or Kimber (Service Dog Trainer) have to do is ask Jax to “sit” or “down,” and he responds immediately.
That kind of enthusiasm doesn’t happen by accident.
When dogs enjoy learning and look forward to spending time with their trainers, they’re more likely to stay engaged throughout the training process.
Preparing for the Next Step
Today, Jax is continuing his journey by enrolling in the Service Dog Handler Course as he works toward becoming a service dog.
Service dog training builds on the same foundation established through obedience, public access skills, and confidence in everyday environments.
Because Jax already has strong manners, experience around distractions, and a solid relationship with his owner, he’s well prepared to continue developing the advanced skills required for service work.
Every service dog has a unique path, but the strongest teams are built on the same fundamentals: trust, consistency, and teamwork.
A Partnership Built Through Training
Looking back, Renee says one of the biggest benefits has been having support throughout every stage of Jax’s development.
She wrote:
“I’m grateful for them and the opportunities K9’s Place provides for socialization and training practice. I can’t recommend them highly enough for any situation you find yourself in with your pup (or grown dog!).”
