How Much Does Service Dog Training Cost?

For many individuals living with a disability, a service dog can provide greater independence, confidence, and support in everyday life. One of the first questions people ask when beginning the journey is:

“How much does service dog training cost?”

The answer depends on the path you choose.

A fully trained service dog from a professional organization or private trainer typically costs between $15,000 and $50,000 or more. The final price varies based on the complexity of the tasks the dog is trained to perform.

At K9s Place, we believe there is another option for many individuals.

If you already have a dog with the right temperament and willingness to work, owner training with professional guidance can be a more affordable path while allowing you to build an even stronger partnership with your dog.

Why Are Service Dogs So Expensive?

Many people are surprised by the cost of a professionally trained service dog, but there are many factors that contribute to the investment.

Most reputable programs spend one to two years preparing each dog before they are matched with a handler. During that time, organizations invest in:

  • Health testing and veterinary care
  • Daily socialization
  • Professional obedience training
  • Public access training
  • Specialized task training
  • Equipment and supplies
  • Handler education and follow-up support

Not every dog is suitable for service work, which means organizations also absorb the cost of dogs that do not successfully complete the program.

When you consider the thousands of hours involved, it’s easy to understand why professionally trained service dogs represent such a significant investment.

Is There a More Affordable Option?

For many individuals, the answer is yes.

Federal law allows individuals with disabilities to train their own service dogs, provided the dog is individually trained to perform tasks that mitigate the handler’s disability.

Owner training still requires dedication, consistency, and professional guidance, but it can significantly reduce the financial investment compared to purchasing a fully trained service dog.

The key is beginning with the right dog and following a structured training plan.

That’s exactly what our team at K9s Place is here to help you do.

The K9s Place Service Dog Training Path

Our program is designed for individuals who already own a dog or are planning to acquire one and want expert guidance throughout every stage of training.

Temperament & Readiness Evaluation

Every successful service dog begins with the right candidate.

Before any formal training begins, we perform a Temperament & Readiness Evaluation to determine whether your dog has the confidence, stability, and drive needed for service work.

This evaluation is included in our training pathway because selecting the right dog is one of the most important steps toward long-term success.

Step 1: Pre-Service Dog Board and Train

Three-Week Foundation Program

Investment: $3,995

The first stage of training is our immersive Pre-Service Dog Board and Train program.

During these three weeks, dogs begin building the strong foundation every future service dog needs, including:

  • Reliable obedience
  • Focus around distractions
  • Confidence in unfamiliar environments
  • Public manners
  • Handler engagement
  • Impulse control

These foundational skills prepare dogs for more advanced public access and task training later in the program.

Step 2: Progressive Group Classes

Four Six-Week Courses

Investment: $250 per class

After completing the Board and Train program, handlers and dogs continue progressing through four structured group classes:

  • Canine Good Citizen
  • Canine Good Citizen Advanced
  • Canine Good Citizen Urban
  • Service Dog Handler Course

Each class builds on the previous one, gradually introducing more distractions, more challenging environments, and more advanced handling skills.

Training alongside other dogs also helps improve reliability and prepares teams for the situations they will encounter in everyday public life.

Step 3: Individual Task Training

Five Private Lessons

Investment: $675

Once strong obedience and public access skills have been established, training becomes individualized.

During the Five Private Task Training Lessons, handlers work one-on-one with a trainer to teach the specific tasks their service dog will perform.

Depending on the handler’s disability, these tasks may include:

  • Retrieving dropped items
  • Deep Pressure Therapy (DPT)
  • Medication reminders
  • Interrupting repetitive behaviors
  • Mobility assistance
  • Other disability-specific tasks

Every service dog partnership is unique, which is why this portion of training is customized to the handler’s individual needs.

What Does the K9s Place Service Dog Training Program Cost?

For many handler and dog teams, the complete service dog training pathway begins at approximately $5,670, making it a significantly more affordable option than purchasing a fully trained service dog through many professional programs.

Your investment includes:

  • Temperament & Readiness Evaluation – Included
  • Pre-Service Dog Board and Train (3 Weeks)$3,995
  • Canine Good Citizen Group Class$250
  • Canine Good Citizen Advanced Group Class$250
  • Canine Good Citizen Urban Group Class$250
  • Service Dog Handler Course$250

More Than Just a Lower Price

While cost is an important consideration, choosing a service dog training program is about much more than price.

A successful service dog partnership requires a dog with the right temperament, a committed handler, and professional guidance throughout the training process.

Our goal is not simply to teach obedience. We help dogs develop the confidence, focus, and reliability required for public access while teaching handlers how to maintain and strengthen those skills long after formal training has ended.

By working together through every stage of the process, many handlers develop an incredibly strong bond with their service dog. They gain a deeper understanding of how their dog learns, communicates, and works alongside them in everyday life.

Is This Program Right for You?

Our service dog training program may be a good fit if you:

  • Already have a dog you believe could become a service dog.
  • Want to actively participate in your dog’s training.
  • Are looking for a more affordable alternative to purchasing a fully trained service dog.
  • Want professional guidance throughout every step of the training process.

Not every dog is suited for service work, which is why the temperament evaluation is such an important first step.
